Video Editing Software: The Basics

Video editing is an incredibly fun and creative process…once you know how. But if you are just learning, video editing can seem like the most confusing task on the planet.  Many people give up in frustration.

If you are new to video editing, I suggest you watch this free video tutorial on editing.  It covers the very basics you MUST know before you try to edit. No matter what editing software you want to use, this video editing tutorial will help you figure it out.

Let me make an analogy between video editing and driving a car. If you know how to drive a Saturn, you will be able to figure out a Ferrari.  They both have steering wheels and an accelerator.  Some of the controls will look different and be in a different place, but the basics are the same.  The same is true for video editing software.  With minor differences, they all have the same basic functions and similar screen layouts.  Video editing software, for the most part, are more alike than different, just like cars.

Having taught hundreds of people how to edit video, I think the single biggest thing that confuses people is the window-laden on screen interface.  No other type of software is like video editing.  The key to learning how to edit is to know what each window does and how it functions in the process as a whole.  Editing is a process of working in one window, then switching to another window, then another, and so on.

So if you have been stumped by video editing, take 8 minutes and 25 seconds to watch this video editing tutorial.  I guarantee that you will come away with a much better understanding of the process, no matter what editing program you are using.

As always, if you have questions, please drop me an email and I will get you an answer.
