Film and video production is a magnificent and unique art form. To become skilled at it, the first step is to familiarize yourself with the many storytelling elements that you as a director will gather and weave together into a story that will entertain and inform.
Visual storytelling as I define it here, could also be described as the mechanics of the craft. Learning the storytelling elements gives you the skills needed to create your own unique story using video production techniques. A novelist uses words, sentences, paragraphs, chapters and semicolons to communicate with the audience. A video maker uses moving pictures, camera angles, music, sound effects, photographic tricks, and other visual storytelling tools to communicate. The second video on this page gives you a complete list of these different storytelling elements.
Learning the different storytelling elements available for you to use as a filmmaker is the fastest way for you to become proficient at visual storytelling. It is a bit like learning a new language but I promise way easier!
