Sony camcorders are some of the best video cameras made. Recently, Sony introduced two new video cameras, the FX 1000 and the HVR-Z5U. Both are high quality HD cameras with awesome 20x professional zoom lenses. The FX 1000, at $3,200 is a top-of-the-line prosumer model and the HVR Z5U, at $4,300 is categorized as a pro camera. The FX 1000 and the HVR-Z5U have many similarities. Both have three 1/3 inch CCD chips as image sensors and both come with a large, fully controlable 20 x zoom lens that gives you manual control over focus, zoom and iris. The major difference is that the HVR-Z5U gives you much better audio recording capabilities, with two XLR audio inputs. The FX 1000 only has a 1/8 inch mini jack for audio. This feature alone would make me buy the HVR-Z5U if I were trying to choose between the two. XLR audio inputs give better sound and having two lets you record two different audio inputs simultaneously, a great feature. (For example, you can have a lavalier wireless mic on your main speaker plus a shotgun mic to get crowd questions.)
The second big plus for the more expensive HVR-Z5U is an optional Flash recorder
that can be tacked onto the back. This lets you record two copies simultaneously, one on a mini DV tape and a second on the Flash drive. This is a GREAT feature to give you a back-up version of everything you tape.
