Online video is more popular than ice cream on a hot day. Even so, many people have yet to figure out how best to generate income with online video. Many groups supplying or creating online video actually lose money, including You Tube.
I think the best ways to make money with video on the internet are:
- Create video products
- Use video to advertise your product, service or website
- Use video to enhance customer relations and communication
As you can see, #2 and #3 above make money INDIRECTLY off video. Outside of producing a video product, it can be difficult to make money DIRECTLY from video.
The traditional broadcasting method of selling advertisements within an unrelated show has been carried over into the online video world. Many online video sharing sites make you sit through a commercial before the video starts. But online video viewers are less willing than their TV-viewing counterparts to sit through commercials. Ads placed on the side of a video are easy to ignore.
Now, you have a new option. You can place clickable links within your video. The links can take your viewers anywhere you want, to your profile page on Facebook or to a sales page where they can buy the guitar you are playing. They can be an affiliate link.
The technology is brand new and is being called by several different names, depending on who is doing the naming. On You Tube, they call clickable links annotations. You Tube annotations limit you to clicking onto another You Tube video, but that is a limitation imposed by You Tube, not the technology itself.
Veeple is a more complete option and they are at the forefront of this technology. Veeple offered it long before You Tube and provide a much more complete service with many more options.
In short, this technology gives you, the video content producer, amazing new power to monetize your videos and provide your viewers with an interactive, engaging web video experience where the commercials, and any information you add, remain unobtrusive, which makes for happy viewers.
Clickable links work by adding a Flash overlay on top of the existing video file. The flash overlay remains a separate object, but to the viewer, it looks like part of the video.
You have several options as the overlays can be made to look and function in a variety of ways. Not all are meant to be clickable. Some, like the text box, thought bubble and speech bubble are meant to just add an addition visual message.
The flash overlays can also be used to add a link to a PDF, Power Point or Word file right into your video. These type of links do not click out to another website but rather allow the viewer to download the document right for your computer!
In the not-so-distant-future, services like veeple will be commonplace. But for right now, it is another example of science fiction come true.
