Remote Studio Video Production with the NewTek VT 5

Broadcast quality video production is easier and less expensive today than ever before.

A basic definition of “broadcast quality” could be a show done with multiple cameras and microphones, (or edited to look that way) along with chroma key and other digital video effects.

Thanks to high-powered computers, creating such a video can be done with a minimal amount of equipment and therefore a minimal budget.

Gone are the days when you needed a huge studio or editing suite filled with thirty or forty components run by ten crew members at a budget of five-million dollars.

One powerful computer with the right software can replace a good deal of those components and consolidate most every task inside of one computer.

That saves not only tons of money but tons of room. You can get by with a MUCH smaller space if you don’t need all that stuff.

This makes videotaping in remote locations easier and more practical. So even if you are way out in the boondocks, broadcast quality video production takes less money, less space, less equipment, less personnel, and less effort than ever before.

Of course, you can also put the same equipment in your basement and still have room for the pool table. 🙂

There are a growing number of different software choices that essentially turn a high-powered desktop computer into a very compact TV and video production studio.

newtek vt5

One solution for setting-up a desktop video studio is the VT5 by NewTek. The video on this page shows you a VT5 in action.

(UPDATE:  With technology moving faster than the speed of sound, the VT5 has been replaced with newer versions, but this sort of system was so revolutionary, the concept still holds.)

The VT5 runs a bit under $9,000, and that does not include the actual computer. The VT 5 includes a huge video card, a breakout box, various converters and accessories.

In addition to the VT5, a complete operation will need cameras, mics, lights, monitors, play/record decks, and cables.

NewTek has been developing innovative digital video editing solutions for a very long time. The VT line has met with great success.

How well I remember New Tek when they first came out with their revolutionary Toaster. Baaaaaaaaa! (It had a fluffy sheep wipe! Honestly one of the most useless digital effects I can think of. But it was cute!)

A longtime working buddy of mine from my TV News days today operates a remote mobile production van that uses a NewTek VT5. The van is owned by the country government. He works as their Video Production and Studio Manager. The county uses the Remote Production Van to create incredible, high-quality shows of county sponsored events: parades, fairs, school events like graduations, dedication ceremonies, and sporting events. The van stays busy.

My buddy, Newt Danley, was nice enough to show me around the van and describe how he has the equipment set up. I made a video about it for my readers here at Video Production Tips. The video shows you what it takes today to create videos that rival what those in the big leagues have been doing all these years with their huge budgets.

Now, even low to medium budget groups can take advantage of desktop video production and create broadcast quality programing.

If you are interested in studio-quality video production, whether you want to stock a mobile production van for remote locations like my friend Newt, or use the same equipment to set up a stationary studio, the NewTek 5, or a similar unit, is one of the best ways to do it.

Below, I have copy/pasted some sales copy off the NewTek website, giving the product’s features, requirements and specs. Below the NewTek copy, I have put a list of additional equipment Newt uses in the mobile production van.

Now go forth and make video!

Thanks for reading Video Production Tips.

  1. Hi,
I read with glee one of your write ups Making a documentary where to start from. the simplistic and yet profound information you shared is quite commendable. well done!

Just to find out do you have books or materials how to write scripts for beginners just like me and the rest of us?

once again thanks a million for sharing this kind of information for free!

  2. I was just wondering what kind of computers i would need to use to run this equipment. Im thinking apple but im really not sure…and how powerful would they need to be?

  3. Hi Paul.
The VT5 runs on PC. The computer needs to be as powerful as possible. The computer tech who put together the machine that is used by the mobile van I showed in the video described it as the most powerful computer he had ever worked on. I have copied the minimum system requirements recommended by New Tek. I hope this helps you.
    Lorraine

    Processor:

•Dual Intel or AMD processors that support SSE2 (Multi-core CPUs recommended)
•Front-side Bus speed of 800MHz or higher
    INTERFACE:

•An open 66MHz PCI slot for the VT[5] card is recommended for best performance (Additional slot needed for breakout cable)
•Any IEEE1394 FireWire card for DV and HDV capture
    GRAPHICS CARD:

    •PCI Express-based graphics card w/ 64MB RAM per display
•DirectX 9.0c or higher # Latest graphics card drivers
•Minimum screen resolution of 1280×1024 required
    SYSTEM RAM:

•2 Gigabytes or more of system RAM

    HARD DRIVES::

•Software-striped SATA drives for video storage and playback
•8 Gigabytes of storage for DVEs and content
•System drive with 2GB of free disk space
    •DVD Drive
    OPERATING SYSTEM::

    •Windows® 7 (x32 or x64), Windows Vista 32-bit or Windows XP Professional (SP2)
•Windows® Media Player 9 or higher
•Windows® Media Encoder 9 or higher for streaming

    When upgrading from previous versions:
For high-definition editing and optimal performance of VT[5] LiveSet™ technology (virtual sets) we recommend dual CPUs or multi dual-core CPUs for the smoothest and fastest operation. Owners of versions prior to VT[4], may need to consider upgrading their NewTek hardware.

*NewTek recommends the optimal system configuration. Systems with slower processor and drive speeds will work with VT[5], but some complex functions may not perform in real-time. Additionally, as new technology becomes available, system recommendations will be updated. Specifications are subject to change without notice.

  4. My son has tons of music that he would like to post on YouTube but he needs to convert the format from mP4 to mP3 do you know of a simple conversion program that he can use to do that? Thank you so much. This is a great website with loads of information for the novice video person.

  5. Hi Ron.
Is he editing this music into video? I would not think he was going to just post a song with no video. Most video editing programs will accept either an MP3 or MP4 so he can convert the entire video when he is done. Most edit programs also do simple conversion. Plus, You Tube will convert files, so you can upload several types of files and they will convert it for you, all automatically. I hope this helps you.

  6. Hi ,
Its a pleasure for me to have come across you . In fact I am a Cameroonian living in my country Cameroon and I have such a great passion for video/film production. Last year with just one camera and without any adequate sound nor lighting facilities I produced a film of which many people appreciated. Since then I have been having a great zeal to set up a video production studio. I am so blessed with all the information I gathered from your website and equally to let you know I have never had a professional training in this field.
Due to financial difficulties , I will like to know how I can get these equipments (already used onces) at a very reduced cost.
I just dream of becoming like you.

    Thanks

  7. Hi Mirabeau Talla.
I wish you much success in putting together your video studio and I am glad to know my blog helped you. Congratulations on the videos you have produced! If you wish to buy used equipment, B&H Photo has a really good used department. They check all the equipment out before reselling it and give you a warranty. So go there with that link and you should be able to find good used video equipment.
    Thanks
    Lorraine

  8. I’ve found your review of the VT5 interesting, including pricing etc, however it appears that this is no longer available. Have you any idea of similar equipment available? Thanks.

  9. Hi Joseph.
NewTek has several options in their line of products. I did this post on the VT5 about 2 years ago so I am sure they have updated. NewTek has been a real leader with this style of production equipment so I would stick with that brand.
